IPSS(国際前立腺症状スコア)とは?
OABSS(過活動膀胱症状スコア)とは?
Medical Interview
Visualizing Your Symptoms with IPSS and OABSS
The most important step in diagnosing benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a careful medical interview.
At Kato Prostate Clinic Tokyo and
Kato Kidney & Urology Clinic Hiratsuka,
we use two internationally recognized questionnaires—IPSS and OABSS—to accurately understand your urinary symptoms.
Both questionnaires are simple self-administered surveys.
They involve no pain, no procedures, and no physical burden.
What Is IPSS (International Prostate Symptom Score)?
IPSS is a worldwide standard questionnaire used to evaluate urinary symptoms caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia.
What does IPSS evaluate?
Based on your urinary condition over the past month, the following symptoms are scored:
-
Weak urine stream
-
Taking a long time to urinate
-
Intermittent urination (starting and stopping)
-
A feeling that urine remains after voiding
-
Frequent urination
-
How many times you wake up at night to urinate
In addition, IPSS also evaluates:
-
How much your current urinary condition affects your quality of life (QOL)
👉 Because symptoms are converted into numerical scores,
IPSS is extremely useful for objectively comparing symptoms before and after treatment.
What Is OABSS (Overactive Bladder Symptom Score)?
OABSS is a questionnaire that mainly evaluates symptoms related to bladder overactivity, such as:
-
Frequent urination
-
Sudden, strong urgency to urinate
What does OABSS evaluate?
-
Number of daytime urinations
-
Number of nighttime urinations
-
Whether you experience sudden, strong urges to urinate
-
Whether urine leakage occurs due to urgency
👉 Even in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia,
overactive bladder symptoms are very common,
and OABSS is an important indicator when selecting appropriate medications and treatment strategies.
Why Are IPSS and OABSS Important?
-
They reflect the patient’s actual discomfort, not just the doctor’s impression
-
They help classify symptom types
(difficulty urinating vs. frequency and urgency) -
They are essential for determining treatment options
-
Treatment effectiveness is easy to understand after therapy
👉 The greatest advantage of IPSS and OABSS is that they turn
“vague urinary problems” into clear, objective numbers.
Summary
During the medical interview for benign prostatic hyperplasia:
-
IPSS evaluates difficulty urinating and overall urinary symptoms
-
OABSS evaluates bladder-related symptoms such as frequency and urgency
By using both questionnaires, we can gather important information to choose
the most suitable treatment for each individual patient.
Although the word “examination” may sound intimidating,
this step simply involves answering a few questions.
